Investing in Palladium Bullion

Palladium, a cousin of platinum, is a precious metal.  Palladium bullion, as other precious metals, is traded on globally on the commodities market.  Palladium is commonly used in the manufacturing of many products.  It is a less expensive substitute for platinum.  The demand for palladium is high, since it’s used in the manufacture of catalytic converters.  It’s also used to make high quality jewelry.  It is often combined with gold to produce what is commonly known as white gold.

Much of the world’s supply of palladium comes from Russia.  The price of palladium was driven up in the past, due to political and economic situations.  At one time the price of palladium bullion was almost equal to the price of platinum.  Now, however, the supply is available, so the price has stabilized.  For this reason, palladium has been used in many places where platinum used to be used. Buying Rare Gold Coins

Everyone has a different reason for why they wanted to initially get started in coin collecting, and for some that reason might actually start to change over time as they build up their collection and begin to learn more and more about the coin world.  Many who haven’t yet gotten involved would be surprised to find how complex of a world it can actually be, often just assuming that collectors are going to snatch up whatever everyday coins they get peddled to them.  Outsiders would likely be overwhelmed with just how many different types of coins are truly available, even without delving into the rarer and thus more difficult types of coins.

Perhaps one of the biggest misconceptions about the coin world is that gold coins are the rarest and most valuable coins, something that no ordinary collector could ever dream to possess.  What many people don’t realize is that the term rare can have a different meaning inside the coin world then any other.  For example, a coin can have thousands of copies and still be rare if the existed number of coins was once in the millions. The Wartime Nickels

The so-called Wartime Nickels were minted from 1942 until 1945. These coins are unique in that, even though they are composition nickels, they are made of copper (56%), silver (35%) and manganese (9%). And if you are not familiar with hearing of the use of manganese, it is for good reason – not many other coins use it. In fact, the only other coins minted in the United States which even use manganese are the Sacagawea Dollars and the Presidential One Dollar Coin Series, and both of those coin series are very recent.

Their inclusion of manganese has led to the criticism that they are more susceptible to wear and dulling, and that these versions of the Nickels often appear much darker than the other Nickels which do not feature manganese. Much of this criticism is derived from the observation of British coins minted before these Nickels, which have the same tendency to darken. However, it is said that sets of these Wartime Nickels which have been protected and well taken care of over the years are almost indiscernible from the standard alloy nickels. Continue reading
